Quintana supera Izaguirre al Romandia
28 de abril de 2016 | Morgins - Atacando, seguro y con soltura, ganó Nairo Quintana la segunda etapa en línea del Tour de Romandía (Moudon-Morgins, 170 km). El colombiano sabía que hoy no podía fallar y en el ascenso al puerto de Morgins (1ª) incrementó el ritmo, valiente y sin reservas, para adjudicarse su primera victoria en tierras suizas y coger el testigo de su compañero Ion Izagirre, líder hasta hoy de la general.La orografía de la etapa –perfil típico suizo quebrado con continuas subidas y bajadas- mostraba un terreno ideal para que se formara una fuga prematura. Sin embargo, la verdadera dureza estaría en los 20 kilómetros finales con el encadenado del puerto de segunda y el final en Morgins. La escapada inicial de seis corredores se descompondría en el ascenso a Les Champs (2ª), donde únicamente aguantarían Silin (KAT), Impey (OGE) y Wyss (IAM). Mientras, en el pelotón, Chris Froome -principal rival de Nairo Quintana en Romandía- sufriría una avería que le dificultaría enlazar con el grupo.
Después de un incansable trabajo en los puertos iniciales de Andrey Amador, Winner Anacona, Jesús Herrada, Gorka Izagirre, Antonio Pedrero y José Joaquín Rojas, únicamente Nairo y Ion se mantendrían en el primer grupo, ya reagrupado a falta de 10 km para el final. Y llegó el momento de Nairo. A falta de 6,5 km para meta, el colombiano soltó al grupo y solo Zakarin (KAT) aguantó su ritmo. Miradas de fatiga y pura psicología entre ambos escaladores. Con Morgins ya coronado, los dos se medirían en un sprint final, con victoria para el de Movistar Team después de una maniobra del ruso que los jueces consideraron irregular. Etapa y liderato para Nairo que supone el 15º triunfo de 2016 para Movistar Team, siempre al frente desde que arrancara la acción en los cantones francófonos suizos hace dos días.
DECLARACIONES:
Nairo Quintana: "Ha sido un día muy bueno. El equipo ha tirado todo el día, trabajando siempre muy bien. Yo venía sintiéndome bien toda la etapa y tenía la oportunidad de atacar para buscar la victoria y hacer diferencias arrancando desde lejos; tenía rivales importantes a mi lado, pero quería probarlo y ha salido como esperaba. A los pocos metros ha venido por detrás un Zakarin realmente fuerte.
Hemos ido los dos para adelante intentando mantener la diferencia hasta el sprint, donde ha hecho una maniobra que los jueces consideran que no es permitida y le han relegado. Realmente Zakarin me podría haber ganado de todas formas, pero esta maniobra le ha causado la sanción. Intentaré defender este maillot mañana haciendo una crono buena y, en función del resultado, aprovechar la última etapa de montaña del sábado. Ojalá podamos mantener este nivel tras los esfuerzos de la semana. No será fácil ganar esta carrera con el cartel de favoritos que hay; si lo logramos, será una señal muy buena en busca del sueño amarillo".
Tour de Romandie. “For us Ilnur is the winner” says Konyshev
28.04.2016 18:45 - In a jury decision that can best be described as controversial, Team KATUSHA’s Ilnur Zakarin was relegated to second place after earning the stage win in a two-up mountain sprint against Nairo Quintana in stage 2 of the 70th Tour de Romandie on Thursday. A slight movement to his right resulted in a protest from the Movistar team and a jury decision to gift the win to Quintana. Zakarin was moved to second place.
- Of course I am sad and disappointed with this decision. I think the decision was wrong. But all I can do now is just be better tomorrow. This situation makes me mad and gives me motivation for tomorrow’s stage – I think I can do a good ITT. I hope tomorrow I can answer what has happened today with the bike, - said team leader Ilnur Zakarin.
An attack from Quintana on the final climb was easily responded to by Zakarin, who rode across to the Colombian rider for the last 6 km of racing. Coming into the last few turns before the finish line in Morgins, Ilnur Zakarin was positioned perfectly and came around Quintana in the closing meters to win the stage with a clear set of wheels. A protest was filed in regards to the movement from Zakarin and a jury decision modified the stage results, giving Quintana the stage win. He also wears the yellow jersey by 18-seconds to Zakarin.
- I completely disagree with the decision of the jury. Ilnur did a small deviation which was nothing, maybe 10 cm. If he had done this movement slowly there would be no discussion, but he did it quickly and now there is talk. In our head and in front of everyone, we won this stage. As best we can understand from the jury’s decision is that they say ‘maybe’ Quintana could have won without the small maneuver from Zakarin, - said a clearly disappointed team director Dmitry Konyshev.
The 173,9 km stage began in Moudon and saw Team KATUSHA rider Egor Silin in the day-long break that pulled out more than five minutes on the road. But by the last two climbs the main GC contenders were in the front with KATUSHA’s Rein Taaramäe driving the pace and making the race hard. In addition to Zakarin’s result, teammate Simon Špilak was tenth.
- The team was working very well today. We saw Silin in the breakaway and Rein impressive on the last climb. Plus I was not expecting such a strong performance from Ilnur today. He’s in preparation for the Giro, so today was just a small test for things to come, - said team director Dmitry Konyshev.
Stage 3 on Friday brings the individual time trial. At 15,11 km the Sion stage features a climb midway through the profile.
