Ventuno anni, tanta energia e molta voglia di lasciare il segno. Federico Zurlo è felice di vestire la maglia di una squadra World Tour e non perde l'occasione per mostrare la sua vitalità.
Nella 2^frazione della Tirreno-Adriatico, la Camaiore-Pomarance di 207 km, il corridore veneto della LAMPRE-MERIDA non ha atteso più di 1 metro dalla partenza ufficiale della tappa per lanciarsi in avanscoperta assieme ad altri 5 fuggitivi, ovvero Andreetta, Benedetti, Cecchinel, Mas Bonnet e Mihaylov.
Il sestetto di attaccanti (foto Bettini) ha trovato una buona intesa, che ha permesso ai battistrada di toccare un vantaggio massimo sul gruppo, condotto dalla BMC, di 6'45", margine che ha iniziato a essere eroso quando il percorso ha iniziato a farsi impegnativo dopo 140 km di corsa.
Nel finale il plotone ha dato una decisa accelerata, arrivando a concludere l'inseguimento a 9 km dal traguardo: il gruppo principale aveva comunque già iniziato ad assottigliarsi ed è giunto con una composizione non superiore alle cinquanta unità all'imbocco del tratto più impegnativo dell'ascesa verso Pomarance.
Proprio quando la strada si impennava con pendenze attorno al 13%, a 3 km dall'arrivo, Ulissi ha provato a giocarsi la carta dell'attacco, ma ha potuto guadagnare solo qualche metro di vantaggio: l'allungo del corridore blu-fucsia-verde ha comunque messo in fila il gruppo di testa, dal quale è partito al contrattacco Stybar, con un'azione potente e rivelatasi poi vincente.
Ulissi ha tagliato il traguardo nel primo drappello di inseguitori del corridore ceco, composto da 36 ciclisti, ottenendo la 12^posizione a 1" dal vincitore.
Al via della 3^tappa, la Castelnuovo Val di Cecina-Montalto di Castro di 176 km, Zurlo vestirà la maglia verde, in quanto 2° nella classifica dei Gpm (il titolare della maglia, Stybar, indosserà la divisa azzurra di leader della graduatoria generale).
"Mi ha fatto piacere aver avuto la possibilità di dare il mio contributo alla squadra con una fuga importante - ha spiegato Zurlo - Con la mia presenza tra i battistrada, la squadra ha potuto concentrarsi nel supportare Ulissi in vista del finale. Tra noi attaccanti si è instaurata una buona collaborazione, abbiamo tenuto sempre un ritmo sostenuto, purtroppo il plotone, dopo averci dato un po' di libertà nella fase iniziale di gara, ci ha tenuto sempre a una distanza di sicurezza e, nel finale, ha intensificato l'inseguimento.
Abbiamo provato a tenere duro, ma da dietro la rimonta è stata troppo veemente.
Quando ci sarà l'opportunità, non avrò problemi a provare ad attaccare ancora".

Twenty-one years old, a lot of energy and much will to be protagonist.
In the 2nd stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico, Camaiore-Pomarance (207 km), Federico Zurlo did not wait too long for attacking from the bunch: one meter after the official start, he was already in a breakaway with other 5 riders (Andreetta, Benedetti, Cecchinel, Mas Bonnet and Mihaylov).
The six leaders of the race (photo Bettini) had a maximum advantage of 6'45" on the peloton, which was led by the BMC, but this gap slowly decreased when the riders approached the hilly sector of the course after the 140th km.
The gap was definitely bridged at 9 km to go by the bunch, which was reduced to no more than 50 riders in the approach of the most demanding part of the final climb to Pomarance.
At 3 km to the arrival, where the road had the maximum gradient of 13%, Ulissi attacked, but he was soon joined by the other top riders and, in that moment, Stybar counter-attacked: the Czech cyclist made the right move which gave him the victory.
Ulissi reached the arrival with the first chasers group (36 members) in 12th position at 1" to Stybar.
Zurlo, who will wear the green jersey in the 3rd stage (he's second in the climbers classification, but Stybar will wear the blue jersey of the general classification), said: "I'm happy I could achieve the target of joining the main breakaway of the stage, which was important for the team because it allowed my mates to dedicate completely their attention to the support of Ulissi.
I knew that the moments just after the start could have been good, that's why I immediately seized the moment.
The cooperation between the breakaway members was good, however the bunch, after that in the early kilometers allowed us to gain a good advantage, did not grant us extra freedom and the chase became even more intense in the second part of the stage.
I will try to escape again whenever the sports directors will ask me to do it".
