Sono saliti in cattedra i velocisti nella 3^tappa della Tirreno-Adriatico, frazione che ha portato il gruppo da Castelnovo Val di Cecina a Montalto di Castro.
Lungo i 176 km del percorso il gruppo ha affrontato solo due abbordabili asperità, ovvero il Gpm di Scansano e l'ascesa verso Manciano (a 35 km dal traguardo), poi strada agevole fino agli ultimi 400 metri, nei quali i velocisti che ambivano al colpo vincente hanno dovuto confrontarsi con un piccolo strappo caratterizzato da una pendenza massima del 7%.
La LAMPRE-MERIDA si è affidata al trio di ruote veloci composto da Zurlo (oggi in verde in quanto secondo nella classifica dei GPM, essendo il capoclassifica Stybar anche leader della graduatoria generale), Ferrari e Modolo: nell'ultimo chilometro (dopo che era stata annullata la fuga di giornata di 4 atleti) l'esperto atleta bresciano ha condotto il terzetto blu-fucsia-verde verso le posizioni di testa del gruppo, lasciando poi a un lanciato Zurlo il compito di portare Modolo sulla rampa di lancio ai -300 metri.
Il giovane vicentino ha dimostrato grinta e coraggio, lottando spalla a spalla con il campione del mondo Sagan, ed è riuscito a portare Modolo in una posizione valida per provare a contrastare il duo Gaviria-Ewan, portatisi nel frattempo al comando della volata (foto Bettini): Sacha ha provato a lanciarsi sulla sinistra della sede stradale, ma il divario da Gaviria (1°) e dall'australiano (2°) si è rivelato non più colmabile.
Il velocista della LAMPRE-MERIDA non è riuscito a contrastare la rimonta di alcuni corridori che sopraggiungevano alle sue spalle, tagliando il traguardo in 8^posizione.
"Pensavo di poter fare meglio, l'arrivo mi piaceva e la strada non completamente piatta nel finale avrebbe potuto favorirmi rispetto ai velocisti puri - ha spiegato Modolo - Ferrari e Zurlo mi hanno supportato bene, abbiamo titubato solo un poco quando ci siamo trovati all'esterno vicino alle transenne, poi mentre mi sono lanciato Gaviria ed Ewan si sono prodotti in una volata incontrastabile. Sapevo che Gaviria sarebbe stato l'avversario da battere, non immaginavo potesse dominare lo sprint in questo modo.
Mi spiace, era una bella occasione e credevo in un buon risultato".
La Tirreno-Adriatico ripartirà da Montalto di Castro alla volta di Foligno, per una tappa di 216 km che presenterà nel finale gli interessanti strappi di Trevi (a 30 km dall'arrivo) e soprattutto di Montefalco (-15 km).

In the 3rd stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico (176 km from Castelnuovo Val di Cecina to Montalto di Castro), the sprinters had the opportunity to exhibit their skills.
The course, in fact, had no demanding hills (only two easy climbs: the Kom of Scansano and the hill of Manciano at 35 km to go), and the bunch approached united the arrival in Montalto di Castro, after having neutralized the four riders breakaway which had led the race from the early kilometers.
The key point of the final part of the stage was at 400 meters to the arrival, when the road had a gradient of 7% which could have been heavy for the pure sprinters.
LAMPRE-MERIDA entrusted their ambitions to the trio Ferrari-Zurlo-Modolo: in the last kilometer, Ferrari led the blue-fuchsia-green train to the head of the group, then Zurlo acted as pilot-fish for Modolo, demonstrating his competitiveness in a side-by-side battle with Sagan.
When Zurlo completed his action, Modolo tried to launch his sprint on the left side of the road, but meanwhile Gaviria had already began his progression, followed by Ewan (photo Bettini).
The Colombian rider reached the arrival in firts position, while Modolo could not contrast him, being also overtaken by some riders who recovered from behind.
LAMPRE-MERIDA's sprinter was 8th.
"I aspired to obtain a better result, I'm not happy with today performance - Modolo explained - The final of the stage was suitable for my skills, I thought to have an advantage on the pure sprinters, my team mates were great in driving me to the head positions.
Maybe we had an hesitation when we were close to the fence on the left side of the road, however I could start my sprint in the proper moment, but Gaviria had already a good advantage thanks to an impressive speed.
I was aware he could have been the favourite, however I could not imagine he could be so strong"
The 4th stage will start from Montalto di Castro and will finish in Foligno after 216 km: in the final 30 km the riders will cover the hills of Trevi and of Montefalco (-15 km).
