I direttori sportivi blu-fucsia-verdi Maini e Marzano avevano chiesto ai propri corridori di poter ammirare una squadra d'attacco nella 4^tappa della Tirreno-Adriatico, la Montalto di Castro-Foligno di 216 km, e una prestazione all'attacco è quella che i ciclisti della LAMPRE-MERIDA hanno fornito.
Conti (foto Bettini), con una lunga fuga, e Ulissi, con un allungo sull'ultima asperità del percorso, sono stati i migliori interpreti per la formazione del team manager Copeland.
Il corridore romano è riuscito a dare vita, dopo circa 15 km di corsa, alla fuga principale della giornata, seguito da Benedetti, Bongiorno e Vilela, un'azione favorita dal gran lavoro preparatorio della LAMPRE-MERIDA che, essendosi trovata esclusa da una prima sortita nata all'8° km, ha lavorato per riportare il gruppo sui battistrada e per lanciare Conti.
Il vantaggio massimo dei fuggitivi è stato di 6'55", poi il gruppo ha preso le misure, fino a quando il giovane atleta laziale ha rotto gli indugi nella fuga, involandosi solitario nel primo passaggio sullo strappo di Montefalco (-58 km): doppio il traguardo per Conti, ovvero il successo di tappa e la maglia di miglior scalatore, obiettivi sfumati per la rimonta del gruppo che ha ripreso il ciclista della LAMPRE-MERIDA a 1 km dallo scollinamento dello strappo di Trevi (-30 km).
Il plotone, tornato compatto, si è diretto rapidamente verso la successiva e ultima ascesa, la seconda tornata a Montefalco, terreno favorevole per Ulissi, il quale infatti non si è fatto attendere e ha piazzato una rasoiata che ha inizialmente consentito al campione toscano di guadagnare un piccolo vantaggio.
La reazione del gruppo non è però tardata e Ulissi è stato raggiunto dai 45 corridori del gruppo principale, rimasto invariato nella composizione fino a un allungo di Montaguti a 6 km dall'arrivo che dà il via a una serie di attacchi: Cummings ha centrato l'azione vincente, precedendo sul traguardo 5 contrattaccanti e il gruppo composto da 39 unità (con Ulissi), in ritardo di 25".
Stybar ha mantenuto il comando della classifica generale, mentre Ulissi è salito in 30^ posizione (+1'35").
Conti occupa la seconda posizione della classifica generale, a 3 punti dal leader Benedetti.
La Tirreno-Adriatico osserverà domenica una giornata di riposo forzato, visto l'annullamento della 5^frazione (partenza da Foligno e arrivo in Salita a Monte San Vicino) a causa delle cattive condizioni climatiche.
"Ho corso con gran morale: si partiva dal Lazio, la mia regione, e ci tenevo a ben figurare, in più i nostri direttori sportivi hanno fissato come obiettivo primario quello della fuga, così ho cercato con molta convinzione di attaccare e sono riuscito a trovarmi nell'azione giusta - ha sottolineato Conti - Pedalare in avanscoperta è stato molto faticoso, perché eravamo solo in quattro e abbiamo dovuto lottare contro un forte vento che soffiava frontale e di lato, condizioni che favoriscono il gruppo.
Ho allungato sullo strappo di Montefalco perché conoscevo la salita e puntavo a balzare al comando della classifica degli scalatori, tenendo comunque sempre presente l'arrivo di Foligno come obiettivo principale.
Purtroppo il plotone ha accelerato decisamente e mi ha raggiunto a 1 km dal Gpm di Trevi: se fossi transitato per primo, avrei indossato la maglia verde".

The blue-fuchsia-green sports directors Maini and Marzano requested to their riders to approach the 4th stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico (216 km from Montalto di Castro to Foligno) with an attacking attitude and their request was fulfilled: Conti (photo Bettini) was the main protagonist of the most important breakaway of the stage and Ulissi attacked on the last hill of the course.
After 15 km in the stage, the young climber from Rome started the four cyclists breakaway which led the race for most part of the course: the action had been encouraged by the whole blue-fuchsia-green team, which had neutralized an early attack in which there was no LAMPRE-MERIDA's riders.
Conti led the race with Vilela, Bongiorno and Benedetti, having a maximum advantage of 6'55", and he tried a solo action on the first passage on the Montefalco hill, at 58 km to the arrival: no one in the breakaway could join LAMPRE-MERIDA' s cyclist, however he could not resist to the chase of the peloton which reached him at 1 km to the summit of the Trevi Kom.
On the following hill, Montefalco again, which was also the last of the course, Ulissi realized an attack, but the group reacted, even if it had been reduced to 45 athletes.
An attack promoted by Montaguti at 6 km to the arrival began a series of moves which gave to Cummings the opportunity to perform the winning attack.
The British rider preceded the 5 first chasers and the main group (39 members, Ulissi was one of them), with a gap of 25".
Stybar maintained the leadership of the overall classification, Ulissi is 30th at 1'35".
Conti is 2nd in the top climber classification (8 points, Benedetti is 1st with 11 points).
Tomorrow, the riders will rest: the 5th stage (Foligno-Monte San Vicino) has been cancelled due to snowy conditions and bad weather forecast.
"My morale was high: I was riding on the roads of my region and I really want to make a good show, moreover the team's sports directors demanded to be in the breakaway, so I was really focused on an attacking attitude, which allowed me to led the race for many kilometers - Conti explained - It was really difficult to pedal in the front of the race with the front and side wind blowing strong, that was the kind of situation which facilitate the bunch. However, I had two goals: the green jersey and the arrival in Foligno, so I attacked on Montefalco hill, which I know very well.
Unfortunately, the bunch raised the speed and my action ended at 1 km to the Kom of Trevi: one kilometer more and I would have obtained the leadership of the climbers classification".
