Paesi Baschi e sconfinamento in Francia, oltre a un tracciato molto mosso dal punto di vista altimetrico (4 Gpm di 3^categoria concentrati nella parte centrale di corsa), nel menù della 13^ tappa della Vuelta, la Bilbao-Urdaz Dantxarinea di 213,4 km.
Una proposta che ha stuzzicato l'appetito di Valerio Conti, capace di inserirsi in un gruppo di attaccanti che hanno dato vita a una interessante fuga dopo 20 km di gara.
I 12 battistrada (oltre al corridore della LAMPRE-MERIDA, presenti Gogl, Wyss, Smukulis, Stamsnijder, Lagutin, Wallays, Lampaert, Stake Laengen, Rossetto, Benedetti e Cardis) hanno trovato una valida armonia che li ha condotti ad accumulare un vantaggio massimo superiore ai 23', sfruttando anche una giornata di calma nel plotone.
Conti ha ben gestito le proprie energie e ha colto con grande fiuto il momento migliore per sferrare un unico e ben assestato allungo: a 20 km dal traguardo, il ventitreenne laziale ha salutato la compagnia dei fuggitivi in un tratto in salita, guadagnando subito un buon vantaggio che, con il passare dei chilometri, è arrivato a sfiorare il 1'.
Con tale confortante margine, Conti ha potuto godersi le emozioni di giungere solitario sulla retta finale (foto Bettini) e di conquistare la sua prima vittoria in un Grande Giro, il terzo in carriera (tappa di Izu al Giro del Giappone 2015 e il Gp Beghelli 2014).
"Una vittoria bellissima per me e per la squadra, sono più che felice - ha commentato Conti - Nei giorni scorsi non trovavo le sensazioni che avrei desiderato, ma sapevo che con la pazienza e la tenacia avrei avuto la mia occasione buona.
La LAMPRE-MERIDA è stata presente in tutte e tre le principali fughe del trittico di tappe che ha fatto seguito al giorno di riposo, oggi il nostro coraggio e la nostra voglia di animare la corsa è stata premiata.
C'è stata battaglia per andare in fuga, questa è stata la parte più impegnativa dell'impresa, poi la nostra azione ha preso subito un bel vantaggio e le cose si sono messe per il verso giusto, anche perché stavo bene e ho trovato molte energie nel finale: sono partito non proprio vicino al traguardo, ma avevo una grande convinzione nei miei mezzi e sono andato forte, non mi aspettavo di distanziare di quasi un minuto i restanti membri della fuga.
Il primo successo in un grande giro è emozionante, grazie alla squadra e a tutti gli sponsor che ci sostengono".

Basque Country and some kilometers on the French land, in addition to a hilly course (four 3rd category ascents in the central part of the race) in the menu of the 13th stage of the Vuelta, 213,4 km from Bilbao-Urdaz Dantxarinea.
This proposal whetted the appetite of Valerio Conti, who joined an attack attempt after 20 km in the race.
The 12 members of the breakaway (in addition to LAMPRE-MERIDA's rider there were Gogl, Wyss, Smukulis, Stamsnijder, Lagutin, Wallays, Lampaert, Stake Laengen, Rossetto, Benedetti and Cardis) cooperated with efficacy and they succeeded in having a maximum advantage which exceed the 23', a gap that the peloton could not neutralized.
Conti managed very well his energies and the made his winning move in the best moment, at 20 km to the arrival, on a hill: LAMPRE-MERIDA's climber went clear from his former breakaway mates and he could rely on an advantage of 1', which gave him the opportunity to enjoy in the best way the feelings of approaching the arrival being the solo leader of the stage and of obtaining the first victory in a Grand Tour, the third in his career (in addition to the Izu stage in the Tour of Japan 2015 and the Gp Beghelli 2014).
"I'm more than happy for this victory, it's a huge satisfaction for me and for the team - Conti explained - In the past days my feelings were not as good as I would have likes, however I did not give up my aims for this Vuelta and today I tried once again to attack.
It is the third time in a row after the rest day that at least one LAMPRE-MERIDA's athlete joins the main breakaway of the stage, today I succeeded in adding the highest value to our efforts.
The hardest part of the day was the battle for going clear from the bunch, then the peloton did not perform an intense chase, so we could manage our energies.
I had good feelings and I chose the best moment for attacking: I was even surprised to see how fast I could go when I was in the front of the race.
