Maglia Verde: Flavia Oliveira (Alè-Cipollini)

ANNA VAN DER BREGGEN IS THE QUEEN OF THE 26TH GIROROSA

And finally, she could do it! The Dutch champion is the new Giro Rosa winner, one year after her team colleague Marianne Vos. Anna Van der Breggen has been great to defend herself by the great attacks of Mara Abbott on the hard ramps to San Domenico di Varzo, winning a magnificient Giro which has been decided in the last two stages in Piedmont. The celebrations at the finish line have been big, with the almost complete Team Rabo-Liv (Just Roxane Knetemann was absent due to a crash today, while she was 10th in the general classification) hugging the Captain. Her teammates were very emotional and they could not hide some tears of happiness: emotions that were demonstrated as well by the technical staff guided by Koos Moerenhout. Rabo-Liv has won also four stages (two with Lucinda Brand, one with Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and one with Anna Van der Breggen) and the White Jersey with the very talented Polish rider Katarzyna Niewadoma. There are celebrations for the other Jersey winners: Flavia Oliveira (Green Jersey and third in San Domenico today), Megan Guarnier (Ciclamino Jersey and third place in the general Classification) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Blue Jersey).

Abbott Takes Solo Victory On San Domenico To Finish The Giro In Second Place

Wiggle Honda Dream Team Professional Cycling

Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s Mara Abbott raised herself to a final second place overall in the 2015 Giro Rosa, with a stunning, solo stage victory on the ninth stage, between Verbania and the ski resort of San Domenico di Varzo. The 29-year-old American, who finished second on the corresponding stage last year, escaped Pink Jersey Anna van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv) in the last four kilometres of the long, steep climb, to cross the line 55 seconds ahead of the Dutchwoman.

The victory was enough to lift Abbott three places in the General Classification, but van der Breggen held on to her Pink Jersey to take victory by a minute and a half. Former Pink Jersey Megan Guarnier finished the stage in fourth place, and took the final place on the overall podium.

“This was a really amazing way to finish the Giro,” Abbott enthused after her victory. “I am so grateful to the team for having faith in me until the end.

“The whole team was amazing, they took care of me all day,” she added. “I was very proud to be following Giorgia Bronzini’s wheel! It meant a lot to me.”

The 92.7 km stage featured several early attacks, but it was not until late on that a group of eleven riders got away. In this break was Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s Stage Six Winner Mayuko Hagiwara, unselfishly looking after her teammates interests as usual. The Japanese Champion’s group was just over a minute clear when the final climb began.

The breakaway group was soon passed by the leaders of the race, whereupon Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s Elisa Longo Borghini began to put pressure on the others on behalf of teammate Abbott. Despite racing on her home roads, and defending her Blue Jersey for the Best Italian Rider, the 23-year-old Tour of Flanders winner began to split the group of overall favourites.

Elisa put in some amazing attacks at the start of the climb and, when I saw the other riders starting to gap each other, I went,” Abbott explained. “With about seven or eight kilometres to go van der Breggen and I went, and then I got away from her with about four kilometres to go.”

With a deficit of two minutes, 29 seconds to van der Breggen at the start of the day, Abbott knew she literally had a mountain to climb to take her third overall Giro Rosa victory, but gave her all in one last-ditch effort to unseat the Dutchwoman on the steep climb to the finish.

“I knew that there was a big gap to win the overall, but anything can happen,” Abbott said. “I’m really happy to get the team on the podium for the overall.”

Having given everything she could for Abbott, Longo Borghini herself finished the stage in 13th place, six minutes and five seconds behind her Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling teammate. Despite having to overcome a physical problem in the closing stages of her fourth Giro Rosa, the Italian finished the race in eighth place overall, and took the Blue Jersey for a second straight year.

“Of course I’m happy to have taken the Blue Jersey, and to finish in the top ten after the problem I had with my leg,” Longo Borghini said. “Today we won the stage with Mara, and she moved up to second in the GC.

“I’m really proud of my team!”

Best Ever Result For Moolman-Pasio In Giro Rosa
The biggest race in women’s cycling ended on Sunday in San Domenico di Varzo. The race which took place over ten days saw team leader Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio finish fourth overall. The result is the best ever for a South African in the only women’s Grand Tour.

“Giro Rosa was an incredible experience this year. It’s really the best Giro I’ve had this far,” Moolman-Pasio said at the end. “Everything was great, from the team support to the equipment. It makes all the difference. I did my best everyday to just stay in contention and not lose too much time.”

Moolman-Pasio crossed the line in fifth place on the final stage, slipping from third to fourth overall. Mara Abbott (Wiggle-Honda) won the stage with maglia rosa Anna van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv) finishing second to extend her lead in the overall.

“Today was a really tough day. Mara Abbott was really strong. Of course I’m very disappointed to miss the podium. Fourth is always the hardest place to finish. I’m feeling really motivated in that I have taken a big step up. I think the rest of the season is going to be great and it’s a privilege to have the support of such amazing girls in the team and incredible staff. Overall I am happy,” Moolman-Pasio said when reflecting back.

The race started well for Bigla Pro Cycling Team with Annemiek van Vleuten winning the opening prologue. The team proudly rode on the front of the peloton the following day in defense of the jersey. Later on during the week the team faced bad luck when key lieutenant for the mountains Doris Schweizer left the race after suffering a concussion. Van Vleuten also crashed and injured her back, which affected her performance. She courageously bounced back on the final stage to go into a breakaway in support of Moolman-Pasio.

“For us winning would be nice but we take the good out of the race,” Team Manager Thomas Campana said. “Two of our goals at the beginning of the season was to be as close to the top teams in the rankings and to develop young talent. We came to the race with relatively inexperienced riders and the team performed well beyond what was expected. We can really be proud of the team and the support our partners have shown to get us the best equipment for the race,” Campana concluded.

The youngest rider in the team, 19 year old Clara Koppenburg completed her first Grand Tour. During yesterday’s time trial, she placed 22nd overall. 24 year old Nicole Hanselmann also did her first Giro Rosa and was impressive in supporting the team leaders.

The team was struck by more bad luck the day before the time trial when seven bicycles were stolen. The team would like to thanks the partners, riders and staff for working around the clock to keep the riders on the road and proudly finish the Giro Rosa.
