Orlando Maini and Bruno Vicino, sports directors overseeing UAE Team Emirates in the Tour de la Provence, fixed as priorities the attempts to join the breakaways starting from the early kilometers.
The riders of the Emirati team fulfilled the requests of their sports directors and they tried to exploit the demanding start of the 1st stage (Aubagne-Istres, 205,9 km) to go clear from the peloton.
After a long series of attack attempts, Geniez and Maison had a small advantage on the bunch and they were joined by UAE Team Emirates' Matej Mohoric and other four riders (Wyss, El Fares, Ballerini and Antomarchi).
Their max advantage was 2'30", unfortunately the peloton reacted bitterly and Mohoric's breakway was soon over, also because the leading group took a wrong direction.
Another breakaway of 4 riders, this time without any UAE Team Emirates' cyclist, went clear with 5' on the chasing group, however their attempt was over at 60 km to the arrival.
The peloton proceeded quickly to the arrival for a massive sprint and Emirati's team leadout train activated for supporting the young gun Oliviero Troia (photo Bettini).
The Italian neo-pro, who was second in the 6th stage of the Vuelta de San Juan, was well focused on t rying to exploit this interesting task which was assigned to him by the team and after the final bend he was in a good position when, unfortunately, he touched another rider with the bike and he was forced to unclip the pedal to try to avoid to crash.
He crossed the finish line in 8th position, Jules won the stage.
"I'm very happy with the attitude of the team in this first stage - sports director Maini commented - We were able to be in all the attack attempts which characterized the early part of the race and we succeeded in joining an important breakaway thanks to Mohoric.
In the final kilometers our leadout train was incisive in helping Troia and launching him in the sprint, it's a real pity he must face that inconvenience, for sure he would have achieved a very good result".

Orlando Maini e Bruno Vicino, direttori sportivi alla guida del UAE Team Emirates nel Tour de la Provence, avevano chiesto alla squadra di cercare di animare la corsa e di non lasciare nulla di intentato, sin dai primi chilometri della prima tappa.
I corridori della formazione emiratina hanno raccolto le consegne e hanno utilizzato l'impegnativo avvio della prima tappa (Aubagne-Istres, 205,9 km) per mettersi in luce.
La salita di 2^categoria, affrontata subito dopo il via, è stato molto combattuto e, nel susseguirsi di attacchi, Geniez e Maison si sono avvantaggiati sul gruppo, venendo raggiunti dopo lo scollinamento dall'atleta dell'UAE Team Emirates Matej Mohoric e da altri 4 corridori (Wyss, El Fares, Ballerini e Antomarchi).
Il vantaggio dei battistrada ha toccato i 2'30", prima della reazione del plotone che, favorito anche dal fatto che i fuggitivi abbiano imboccato una strada sbagliata, ha ricucito il divario dopo una sessantina di chilometri dall'inizio dell'attacco.
Una nuova fuga di quattro corridori è arrivata a un vantaggio massimo di 5', ma la collaborazione tra squadre nel gruppo non è mancata e così i battistrada sono stati ripresi a 60 km dal traguardo.
Gruppo compatto in vista dello sprint e treno dell'UAE Team Emirates in assetto perfetto per lanciare il giovane Oliviero Troia (foto Bettini): l'atleta ligure è uscito bene dall'ultima curva, ma un contatto fortuito con un avversario lo ha costretto a sganciare il piede destro dal pedale, per evitare di perdere l'equilibrio.
Troia ha tagliato il traguardo in 8^posizione, la volata è stata vinta da Jules.
"Abbiamo interpretato la corsa riuscendo a seguire il copione che avevamo ipotizzato - ha spiegato il ds Maini - Nella prima parte di gara, dovevamo concentrare le nostre energie per cercare di andare in fuga e siamo riusciti a essere presenti con Mohoric in un'azione.
Nel finale, tutti i corridori avevano la volontà di dare il loro contributo a Troia, per offrirgli l'opportunità di giocarsi le sue carte in volata. Peccato per il contatto che ha precluso a Oliviero il raggiungimento di un risultato sicuramente interessante".
