TWO WINS IN ONE DAY FOR TEAM BAHRAIN McLAREN

Sunday, August 2nd – A great day for Team Bahrain McLaren as we celebrated two wins in two races today. In Spain Damiano Caruso soloed to victory at Circuito de Getxo, while one hour later Sonny Colbrelli sprinted to victory at the second stage of the Route d’Occitanie.
After yesterday’s third place, this time the Italian sprinters did it, taking his first win of the season.
Today’s stage from Carcassonne to Cap Découverte (174.5km) was another sprinter-friendly day with an uphill finish, that suited a rider like Sonny.
As in the opening stage, our team did a good job to control the race, as the day’s breakaway had a steady advantage of seven minutes over the peloton and the only man remaining was caught with just 1km to go.
So as expected it was another bunch sprint, with Sonny Colbrelli that put a strong effort to take the win ahead of the race leader Coquard and Bonifazio.
Sonny Colbrelli says: “I’m very happy, as yesterday I couldn’t finish it off. I started the sprint with 300 meters to go, but this time I did it. I’m happy for my teammates as well because they pulled in front and worked hard as in the opening stage. This victory is for them and for my family. Moreover, the win gives me and the team more confidence before the next races ahead as Milan-Sanremo”.
Tristan Hoffman, Team Sports Director comments: “Sonny did everything right, today he was just a little bit stronger than on stage 1. It was really on the limit as the breakaway was strong today and we decided to pull too, to get it back. The work of the team was amazing also today. It was exciting until the last km, and Sonny put in the work of the boys, delivering a beautiful win”.
Tomorrow Route d’Occitanie continues with stage 3 that is a tough mountain stage on the Pyrenees and decisive for the GC.
The amazing day of Team Bahrain McLaren started with the success of Damiano Caruso at Circuito de Getxo.
The Italian rider grabbed his chance to get his first individual victory that was „on hold“ since 2013.
The strong and experienced Sicilian went into a solo with the great support of Pello Bilbao to a great win of Circuito de Getxo at today’s’ rainy conditions and wet and slippery city roads.
Damiano Caruso: “It is a great feeling. I got this victory after a very long period of time and I am really proud of myself and proud of my teammates. They helped me really a lot during the race and the guys have done an amazing job.
I had a good feeling with my bike, and a good feeling for racing, so in the end, I found the right moment for taking this victory.
I went lap by lap and the feeling was getting better and better. My attack wasn’t in a plan but the selection was done at the last steep climb I said to myself, why not to make the difference now. And at the end I was lucky and I made the right decision in the ideal moment for the uphill finish.
My next races are Milan – Sanremo and Dauphine and I’m looking towards to those big races after today’s’ victory”.
Damiano Caruso managed to hold the distance from Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT Pro Cycling) who finished second and Eduard Prades (Team Movistar) as third.
