Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka look ahead after today's time trial

Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) won the stage 3, 15km individual time trial at the Tour de Romandie. Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) finished in 2nd place and Bob Jungels was 3rd. Nairo Quintana (Movistar) held on to the overall race lead.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka began the day with the hopes of Kanstantsin Siutsou and Cameron Meyer riding to a good result but it wasn't really to be our African Team's day.

Meyer started well and when he crossed the line, his time was good enough to place him 7th fastest. As the top GC guys came in though, Meyer slipped down to eventually finish 1'21" down on the stage winner, Pinot. It was still a beneficial day for our African Team riders though as they were able to test the legs in the time trial discipline ahead of the upcoming Giro d'Italia and Tour of California.

Tomorrow will be another day of climbing at the Tour de Romandie and we will be looking to support Merhawi Kudus once again. Our young Eritrean sits 6th in the young rider classification and he will be looking to ride back into the top 3 after tomorrow's difficult stage.

Today we had a really interesting course. There was 3km straight into a headwind, then it was a bit technical before the climb and obviously the climb had those 2 ramps with a bit of a dip in the middle. The descent was really fast, 90 - 100km/h into the final few kilometers which were also quite technical. The main objective was for Cameron to have a really good workout and also to see how Kanstantsin was feeling. It was also good to go through the full process of a proper time trial especially for Merhawi. He went through a full warm up and then he went full through all the corners and could really test himself. He looked super smooth on the climb and despite him being the smallest on our team, he went down the descent the fastest. He can be happy with his ride and this bodes well for the future as looking ahead, we can still work on his time trial. Cam was really solid, you can tell he is an expert just by the way he goes through the corners on the ski's. Looking ahead to California, today he was good, it's just the climb with those 2 ramps suited the bigger guys who were able to really power over the top. At the end of the day it was a good day, we had some good weather and it's just a pity it is forecast to change tomorrow. We need to prepare accordingly so that we can support Merhawi as best as possible.

Une victoire historique de Thibaut Pinot

Il ne faut pas se tromper, en gagnant vendredi le contre la montre individuel du Tour de Romandie, Thibaut Pinot apporte à son équipe FDJ l’une des victoires les plus importantes de son histoire, au même titre que le Paris-Roubaix de Frédéric Guesdon ou le Milan-San Remo d’Arnaud Démare. Pour y parvenir, le leader du Trèfle a devancé parmi les meilleurs spécialistes mondiaux, notamment Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) et Christopher Froome (Team Sky).

le 29 avril 2016 - Tour de Romandie, Etape 3 « D’entrée de jeu, explique Yvon Madiot, on a compris que Thibaut était dans une très bonne journée. Ce matin, il m’a paru serein et tranquille. Il m’a dit après la reconnaissance qu’il avait de bonnes jambes. Quand il s’est élancé, il a immédiatement trouvé son rythme. Après 1,7 kilomètre, vent de face, il avait sept secondes d’avance sur Steve Morabito qui avait alors le quatrième temps. Là, Thibaut a compris qu’il était dans le bon tempo. Nous avions mis quelqu’un après 3 kilomètres et là, il avait le meilleur temps absolu, devant tous les spécialistes mais on ne lui a pas dit tout de suite… »

Au sommet de la côte longue de 3,5 kilomètres, Thibaut avait encore le meilleur temps avec 10 secondes d’avance sur Tom Dumoulin. Plus tard, Zakarin est passé avec 13 secondes de retard. Quintana avec 8 secondes.

« C’était un bon parcours pour Thibaut, poursuit Yvon, mais dans la descente on se doutait que Dumoulin, plus puissant, allait refaire un peu de son retard. Avec Julien Pinot qui était à côté de moi, on lui a dit que ça allait se jouer à la seconde pour la victoire d’étape, qu’il ne fallait rien lâcher. Il n’a rien lâché. Meilleur temps sur la ligne d’arrivée et devant tous les gros rouleurs, on est super content. Avec Julien on reste dans la voiture et on attend le résultat de Zakarin et Quintana. Et là, on hurle, vous n’imaginez pas comment ! C’est magnifique. »

Yvon et toute l’équipe FDJ est folle de joie de voir leur leader gagner mais le directeur sportif du Trèfle relève la performance d’ensemble de ses coureurs parce que si Thibaut a gagné le premier chrono World Tour de l’histoire de la FDJ, trois de ses équipiers figurent dans les quinze premiers. Steve Morabito est neuvième, Alexandre Géniez onzième et Sébastien Reichenbach est quinzième.

« C’est étonnant parce qu’avant le départ, si tout le monde voulait bien faire, on a préconisé aussi de savoir ne pas se mettre à bloc en vue de la grosse étape de montagne samedi. Et puis les gars abattaient de super temps et tout le monde s’est pris au jeu. »

Grâce à sa très belle performance, Thibaut est deuxième du classement général à 23’’ de Quintana. Il devance Zakarin de 3 secondes et Ion Izagirre de 6 secondes. La victoire du Tour de Romandie se jouera entre ces quatre coureurs demain lors de la quatrième étape qui sera conclue par la double ascension de Villard-sur-Ollon après le col des Planches. Et dans des conditions météo annoncées difficiles.

Enfin, pour bien préciser le chemin parcouru par Thibaut depuis un an, il faut se souvenir qu’il avait perdu le Tour de Romandie dans le contre la montre final en finissant au-delà de la dixième place. Significatif, non ?

Otro paso adelante en la CRI

29 de abril de 2016 | Sion - Lejos quedó el tímido colombiano que se mostraba modesto y discreto en la contrarreloj. La cuarta jornada del Tour de Romandía -15 km contrarreloj en Sion- sirvió para destapar a un Nairo Quintana ambicioso en velocidad punta. Tampoco Ion Izagirre decepcionó; el gipuzcoano rayó a un nivel muy parejo al de su victoria en el prólogo para completar una notable crono, 8º en el total y cuarto en la general a sólo 29" de su compañero.

El recorrido favorecía a las dos referencias azules -5 km suaves de inicio; cuatro intensos de subida por la Route de Savièse; y un descenso rapidísimo hacia meta- y ambos se encargaron de mostrar una vez más su buena condición en el paso intermedio. Allí, Nairo Quintana mejoró en 5” la marca de Ilnur Zakarin (KAT), su gran rival ayer, comparativa que optimizó después trazando perfectamente las bifurcaciones del tramo final urbano para dejar 8” por detrás al ruso -26" en la general-. Por delante se situaba Thibaut Pinot (FDJ), capaz de batir por 2" a todo un especialista como Tom Dumoulin (TGA) y endosar 9" a un Nairo que ve cómo el francés pasa a ser su máximo contrincante, a 23".

Otra jornada salvada para el bloque telefónico, camino del día decisivo en tierras suizas, mañana, con el bucle alrededor de Villars-sur-Ollon. Las dos subidas a Barboleusaz (1ª), coronada la última de ellas a cuatro kilómetros de meta, rematará una jornada reina con otros dos pasos puntuables y un total de 173 km.

Nairo Quintana: "Muy contento. Hemos defendido bien el maillot, seguimos líderes y esperamos mañana poder controlar sin ningún problema. Fue una crono muy buena para mí, que me da confianza para seguir trabajando bien y llegar fuertes al objetivo principal que tenemos en la cabeza. Esta prueba en Romandía me ha venido fantástica. También es cierto que era una contrarreloj diferente, con subida bastante dura, pero la satisfacción está ahí.

¿Pinot? No me ha sorprendido. He visto que hace un par de años viene haciendo CRI muy buenas y sabía que sería un rival duro y tendría que rendir a tope para que el liderato no estuviese en peligro. Tiene un equipo que le respalda, muy fuerte, y mañana habrá que seguir teniendo atención, porque puede ser un rival bastante peligroso. Estaremos atentos a los ataques que vengan. Seguro que tanto Zakarin como él y sus equipos lo van a probar. El equipo está bastante bien y todos ellos, seguramente también Ion, me respaldarán a las mil maravillas para controlar esos movimientos”.
