November 12, 2017 - Matthijs Büchli won gold in the keirin at the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester, England, today. The BEAT Cycling Club rider crossed the line ahead of Andrii Vynokurov and Juan Peralta Gascon to secure first place in the final and take home the gold, a week after his gold medal in BEAT Cycling Club’s World Cup debut.
BEAT Cycling Club already wrote history last weekend with the team’s first participation as a UCI team in an event at the highest level, the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Pruszków, Poland. There, Matthijs Büchli won his first keirin gold for BEAT Cycling Club. Earlier this weekend, BEAT Cycling Club achieved success at the Manchester World Cup by winning silver in the team sprint.
Büchli showed his top form both in Friday’s team sprint and during Saturday’s sprint tournament. Against all odds, he reached the semifinals, where he suffered a crash in the second heat after a minor error, putting him out of competition for the final for bronze, which he had qualified for. Despite his slight injuries, Büchli started the keirin earlier today.
Büchli was incredibly happy with this result: “This is so bizarre. I had never expected this. Yesterday, I was hurting a lot. This morning I had no confidence in today's tournament. I wanted to use today's first heat to see how things felt. I raced without any tactics and completely on autopilot. The first round and the final just went very well and especially very fast. Apparently, such a crash doesn't matter if you are in shape.”
Coach Tim Veldt was very surprised by the result: “This is unbelievable, after a fall like yesterdays, we had never expected this. Matthijs proves how incredibly strong he is."
