STAGE 2
CRAZY DAY AT PARIS-NICE !

In a particularly rainy weather marked by the new restrictions linked to the spread of the coronavirus, the riders concentrated on what they know how to do best: riding without counting and being focused only on the race. During the 166.5 km race in the green plains of the Essonne, Seine-et-Marne, Eure-et-Loir and Loiret, the peloton was once again nervous, due to the wind, the wet roads and the numerous echelons.

Martin, a fall without gravity

Throughout the afternoon, the Cofidis team worked hard to ride together in order to keep up with the changes in pace. But with around fifteen kilometres to go to the finish, everything accelerated. While he was in a good position, Guillaume Martin was the victim of a crash when he touched the wheel of another competitor. Fortunately, he got up quickly, suffering only superficial wounds on his right side. He will of course be at the start of the 3rd stage tomorrow.

Then, Peter Sagan's Bora dynamited the leading group. Yet well placed, Elia Viviani, Damien Touzé and Cyril Lemoine were then distanced. Nevertheless, the European champion got involved in the sprint of the 2nd group by taking an honourable 13th place. In spite of the harsh conditions and the pace, the northern team knows that it will have new opportunities to shine tomorrow.

COMMENTS
Guillaume MARTIN: "I had good legs and I was getting back into the game a bit at the general. But at the last difficult place to negotiate, a rider made a gap on the edge. I couldn't avoid his rear wheel and that's what caused my crash. It was difficult after that because my bike was damaged. Of course it's a complicated start to Paris-Nice but I still have a good feeling. I'll have to be patient before I finally arrive on a more suitable terrain for me. But I'm not one to give up and the week is still long."

Cédric VASSEUR, general manager: " With the wind and the risk of echelons, we expected this scenario. With around ten kilometres to go to the finish, I had high hopes because Elia (Viviani) and Guillaume (Martin) had resisted the echelons. Then everything changed with Guillaume's fall and a final echelon. For the moment, the stages of this Paris-Nice are not really suitable for pure sprinters but we will find a scenario that suits us and why not on the side of La Châtre tomorrow."
