Brocci, L’Eroica è figlia delle mie passioni di ragazzo
Gaiole in Chianti (SI), 30 settembre 2016 - L'idea de L'Eroica è figlia delle mie passioni di ragazzo, della eco che ancora era molto forte attorno al duello sportivo del secolo fra Bartali e Coppi. Tutta la generazione di mio padre ne era stata coinvolta, quei due campioni avevano riscattato l'immagine dell'Italia nel mondo dopo una guerra disastrosa.
Il ciclismo era lo sport popolare per eccellenza, il più seguito nel mio bar di bambino. Poi, agli inizi degli anni 90, scrissi un progetto giornalistico che lanciava l'idea del Parco Ciclistico del Chianti, ovvero la mia zona come ideale di per sé per andarci in bici. Era un modo di pensare ad uno sviluppo di questi spettacolari territori senza doverne cambiare i connotati, senza svenderli. Nel 95 organizzai la prima Granfondo, dedicata al grande campione toscano Gino Bartali e dal 97 nacque L'Eroica come gadget per chi partecipava, appunto, alla "Bartali": due settimane dopo, senza pagare di nuovo, chi aveva corso la Granfondo si poteva reiscrivere a questa cicloturistica d'epoca. Non competitiva, si legava all'idea della preservazione delle ultime strade bianche ed alla riscoperta delle antiche radici del ciclismo; si poteva fare anche con bici normali ma noi avremmo premiato solo chi veniva su bici vecchie, riproponendo l'immagine di un ciclismo che aveva fatto innamorare tanta gente.
Per anni è stata gestita da un gruppo di amici per pura passione, in modo volontario, ciò che fondamentalmente resta ancora oggi connotato saliente, ed il suo successo deriva proprio dalla condivisione di sentimenti che la gente de L'Eroica è stata in grado di trasmettere ad ognuno dei suoi sempre più numerosi partecipanti.
Il primo segreto del suo successo, tuttora, è l'autenticità che vi si respira, uguale a sé stessa anche coi grandi numeri che ha raggiunto.

Il villaggio globale de L’Eroica
Con L’Eroica, Gaiole in Chianti diventa un villaggio globale interamente dedicato al ciclismo eroico e alle emozioni che il fascino del tempo suscita in ognuno dei partecipanti. Gaiole per sua natura è molto tranquilla ma nei giorni de L’Eroica si trasforma per rendere omaggio alla passione di migliaia di uomini e donne in arrivo da ogni angolo del mondo. Le ex Cantine Ricasoli sono il centro del villaggio, uno splendido edifico reso quest’anno ancora più bello da Eroica Caffè, dalle mostre, dagli spettacoli teatrali, dal via vai dei ciclisti che ritirano il pacco gara, dal mercatino così da trasformare Gaiole in Chianti nella “Woodstock del ciclismo eroico”. Ciclismo che ormai ha conquistato il mondo intero, sempre più provincia di Gaiole.
LA BICI EROICA
Per bici eroiche si intendono biciclette con tutte le seguenti caratteristiche:
biciclette da corsa su strada costruite prima del 1987 (non MTB, da ciclocross o da cronometro); telaio in acciaio (in alluminio ammesse ALAN e VITUS con congiunzioni avvitate ed incollate);
leve del cambio sul tubo obliquo del telaio (ammessi comandi bar-ends ante ‘80);
pedali muniti di fermapiedi e cinghietti (non è ammesso alcun tipo di sgancio rapido, sono ammessi pedali Cinelli M71);
passaggio dei fili dei freni esterni al manubrio (consentito il passaggio dei fili all’interno del telaio); ruote montate con cerchi a profilo basso (max 20 mm) e almeno 32 raggi.
Chi conosce la storia del ciclismo, sa che, nei primi anni ’80, le biciclette cambiarono dopo essere state esteticamente uguali a se stesse per trent’anni. Furono introdotte le prime leve dei freni con il passaggio dei fili all’interno del manubrio e poi, vera rivoluzione, i pedali a sgancio rapido. La transizione durò circa 4 anni e si può ben dire che, dal 1987, praticamente non esistevano più bici senza queste migliorie.
Noi abbiamo solo “fotografato” quelle periodo della storia della bicicletta che parte dalla bici di Coppi con il primo cambio Simplex usata nel Tour del ’49 fino a quelle di Saronni e Kelly che, a fine carriera, furono gli ultimi a resistere alle novità ormai da tutti adottate.
Dal punto di vista strettamente tecnico, il telaio d’acciaio abbinato alle ruote tradizionali con almeno 32 raggi garantiscono l’elasticità e la capacità di assorbire gli urti necessari per la guida in sicurezza lungo le nostre strade bianche.
Brocci: L'Eroica is the product of my youthful dreams
Cycling was the people’s sport, and by far the most popular sport in the local bar when I was growing up. Then, at the beginning of the 1990s, I prepared a project launching the idea of a Chianti Cycling Park, meaning a park in my area, which is ideal for cycling. The idea was to think of a way to develop this spectacular territory, without changing its character, without selling out. In ’95 I organised my first Granfondo, dedicated to the great Tuscan champion, Gino Bartali and in 1997 L'Eroica was born, initially as a ‘junket’ for participants of the "Bartali" granfondo: two weeks later, at no extra cost, those who had taken part in the Granfondo could register to participate in this non-competitive vintage leisure ride. Linked to this was the idea of maintaining the last white roads and rediscovering the old roots of cycling. At the time, the event was open to all types of bikes but only those on old bikes were awarded prizes. We wanted to represent the image of the type of cycling that had awoken the enthusiasm of many people.
For years, L’Eroica was managed voluntarily, out of pure passion, by a group of friends, something that is still very noteworthy today. Its success is mainly due to the sense of sharing a common passion that L’Eroica has been able to transmit to each and every one of the ever-growing number of participants.
The main secret of its success is still its authenticity, the fact that the event has remained the same despite the huge numbers that are now involved.

L’Eroica Global Village
During L’Eroica, Gaiole in Chianti becomes a global village that is entirely dedicated to ‘heroic’ cycling and to the excitement that bygone days evoke in all the participants. Gaiole is naturally a very quiet town but during the days of L’Eroica, it transforms itself to welcome the thousands of men and women who arrive from every corner of the world. The centre of the village is the ex-Cantine Ricasoli, an impressive building, which will be even more splendid this year because it will house the Eroica Caffè, exhibitions, theatrical shows, cyclists coming and going to collect their race packs and the vintage market in its grounds, transforming Gaiole in Chianti into the “Woodstock of vintage cycling”. The cycling that has won over the entire world, from its humble beginnings in the little town of Gaiole.
THE EROICA BICYCLE
By “bici eroica” we mean a bicycle that has all the following characteristics:road racing bicycles built before 1987 (no MTB, cyclo-cross or time trial bikes); steel frame (aluminum ALAN and VITUS are allowed with screwed or glued joints);
shift levers on the frame’s oblique down tube (pre-1980 bar-end gear shifters are allowed);
pedals with toe-clips and straps (quick release, clipless pedals are not allowed, Cinelli M71 pedals are acceptable);
brake cables must pass outside and over the handlebars (but can pass inside the frame); wheels must be laced to a low profile rim (max 20 mm depth) and have at least 32 spokes.
Those who know the history of cycling know that in the early 80s, bicycles changed after having been the same for thirty years. The first brake levers with cables inside the handlebars were introduced. Then there was the real revolution: quick release pedals. The transition lasted about four years and after 1987 there were practically no bikes left without these improvements.
We just “photographed” this historical period of the bicycle, starting with Coppi’s bike which had the first Simplex gears used in the Tour in 1949, up to the time of Saronni and Kelly who, towards the end of their careers, were the last to resist the changes which had been adopted by everyone by then.
From a strictly technical point of view, the steel frame combined with traditional wheels with at least 32 spokes, guarantee elasticity and the capacity to absorb bumps, which is necessary to ride safely along the white roads.
