ARLENIS SIERRA QUINTA AL CAMPIONATO DEL MONDO

Solo pochi centimetri hanno separato oggi Arlenis Sierra da uno storico podio al Campionato del Mondo su strada di Lovanio: la campionessa cubana della A.R. Monex Liv Women's Pro Cycling Team si è infatti resa protagonista di una gara eccellente che l'ha vista tagliare il traguardo in quinta posizione dopo aver lottato spalla a spalla con le migliori atlete al mondo. La corsa si è disputata su un percorso molto nervoso di 157.7 chilometri, senza grandi salite ma con una ventina di brevi muri e continue curve e cambi di direzione: dopo una prima parte relativamente tranquilla, la velocità del gruppo è aumentata notevolmente negli ultimi 50 chilometri con Arlenis Sierra che è sembrata pedalare sempre meglio con il passare del tempo. 

Nel finale Arlenis Sierra ha provato a rispondere in prima persona ad alcuni attacchi che potevano rivelarsi decisivi: la stella della A.R. Monex Liv Women's Pro Cycling Team era infatti l'unica rappresentante di Cuba in gara, ed in ogni momento ha dovuto fare da sola senza quel supporto fondamentale che invece hanno avuto quasi tutte le sue rivali in una prova estremamente dispendiosa di energie fisiche e mentali. Sierra ha quindi provato a lanciare nello sprint finale, recuperando molte posizioni all'ultimo chilometro, ma la stanchezza si è fatta sentire togliendo alle gambe quello spunto che avrebbe potuto regalare una medaglia: il quinto posto è quindi accolto con un mix di emozioni, tra la soddisfazione per un risultato di prestigio e il rimpianto per il podio sfumato di poco. 

«Se sono contenta? Un po' sì e un po' no - ha dichiarato Arlenis Sierra - perché è stata un'ottima gara e ad un certo punto speravo di poter ottenere anche qualcosa in più, di poter prendere una medaglia. Credo che il momento decisivo sia stato a circa 6 km dall'arrivo, aveva attaccato un gruppetto molto pericoloso con Vos e Longo Borghini, potevano arrivare e così mi sono mossa in prima persona: purtroppo appena sono rientrata le altre si sono fermate, ma lo sforzo fatto è stato intenso. In volata poi ero stanchissima, non avevo le forze per poter fare di più, ma se c'è un rimpianto è proprio per quell'attacco sfumato».

ARLENIS SIERRA FIFTH AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Only a few centimeters separated Arlenis Sierra from a historic podium at the World Road Championship in Leuven today: the Cuban champion of the A.R. Monex Liv Women's Pro Cycling Team was in fact the protagonist of an excellent race that saw her cross the finish line in fifth position after fighting shoulder to shoulder with the best cyclists in the world. The race took place on a very nervous course of 157.7 kilometers, without major climbs but with about twenty short walls and continuous turns and changes of direction: after a relatively quiet first part, the speed of the peloton has increased considerably in the last 50 kilometers with Arlenis Sierra who seemed to ride better and better with the passing of time. 

In the finale, Arlenis Sierra tried to respond in first person to some attacks that could prove decisive: the star of the A.R. Monex Liv Women's Pro Cycling Team was in fact the only representative of Cuba in the race, and at any time she had to go alone without that fundamental support that instead almost all of her rivals had in an extremely expensive event of physical and mental energy. Sierra then tried to fight in the final sprint, recovering many positions at the last kilometer, but fatigue made itself felt by taking away from the legs that kick that could have given a medal: fifth place is therefore welcomed with a mix of emotions, the satisfaction for a prestigious result and the regret for the missed podium. 

«Am I happy? A little yes and a little no - said Arlenis Sierra - because it was an excellent race and at a certain point I hoped to be able to achieve something more, to be able to take a medal. I think the decisive moment was about 6 km from the finish, a very dangerous group went away with Vos and Longo Borghini, they could have gone and so I moved in first person: unfortunately as soon as I caught them, the others stopped, but the effort was intense. Then in the sprint I was very tired, I didn't have the strength to do more, but if there is one regret, it is precisely for that attack».
