Van
Summeren delivers victory at Paris-Roubaix
11
Aprile 2011 - Johan
Van Summeren delivered an emotional victory for
Garmin- Cervélo
in Paris-Roubaix as the team played a tactically
perfect race with strength in numbers to win one of
cyclings most prestigious and oldest one-day classics
of the year.
This
is a great win for me and its thanks to my team
that I was able to win,
Van Summeren said after hoisting the trademark cobblestone
trophy over his head. Thor (Hushovd)
was the leader today for our team. Hes the world
champion and I was working for him. When the tactics
played out, I was in position to make an attack. I could
tell early on that I had good legs.
A
knee injury knocked Van Summeren out of last
weekends Tour of Flanders, but he was back
at full strength for the 104th edition of the Hell
of the North.
The
30-year-old Belgian made it through the critical Arenberg
cobblestone sector unscathed and then bridged out to
an early breakaway to forge an important, 1:20 lead
going into the decisive final 50km of the 258km race.
Gabriel Rasch later bridged out to give Garmin-Cervélo
two riders in the big, 20-rider lead group.
World
champion Thor Hushovd was able to shadow defending
champion Fabian Cancellara when the late attacks
came, but with Van Summeren up the road, Hushovd
could afford to play the waiting game and put pressure
on Cancellara. Roubaix rookie Sep Vanmarcke
also bridged out to the Hushovd group, giving
Garmin-Cervélo two riders in each group going
into the final battleground.
The
team played a perfect tactic today. Thor was
a team captain and he was able to follow Cancellara,
so you could see that he was very strong today. Johan
was smart to get into that breakaway and we kept telling
him to wait for Thor. And when Thors group
didnt reach the front, we gave Johan the chance
to attack, said Garmin-Cervélo
sport director Jonathan Vaughters.
This,
by far, is our biggest win as a team. And were
especially pleased the way we won it. People have to
remember that cycling is a team sport and we rode our
team tactics today to perfection.
Roubaix
is arguably the most grueling race on the calendar and
Garmin-Cervélo saw its fair share of mishaps.
Punctures and crashes are inevitable and Heinrich
Haussler and Roger Hammond both hit the
deck just as the main bunch was roaring toward the decisive
Arenberg cobbles. Hammond was sent to
a local hospital and Hausser was unable to finish.
Van
Summeren lit up the race after coming out of the
Arenberg in good position. The tall Belgian charged
out of the pack of favorites to lead the chase to eventually
join up with the days early main breakaway. Gabriel
Rasch also bridged out, putting two Garmin-Cervélo
jerseys in the a front group of 21 going into the
decisive, final 50km.
We
had Thor coming up from behind, so we kept telling
the other guys in the break it wasnt up to us to
work, Van Summeren said. Missing
Flanders last week really made a difference. I
could tell straight away I was the strongest in the group.
Hushovd
was right where he needed to be at the decisive moments
in the closing 50km. He shadowed arch-rival Cancellara
with attacks across the rough Pevele sector.
Garmin-Cervélo
won the arms race, with Rasch and Van Summeren
in the lead group and Vanmarcke eventually bridging
across to the Cancellara-Hushovd-Flecha trio with 30km
to go.
This
is my first Roubaix, but to be able to play such
a key role late in the race gives me motivation for
me, Vanmarcke said, who finished
20th at 3:43. Everyone
was very motivated to race today. We knew we would have
a good chance to win and now that we did, its
just amazing. I am very tired, but very happy!
Hushovd
played the loyal teammate and rode defensively to help
Van Summeren have his chance to win and crossed
the line eighth at 47 seconds back.
Of
course, I was not going to work when I had teammates
up the road,
Hushovd said.
This team is very united and we always work together.
I am very happy that we could win today. That was our
goal and we achieved it.
Van
Summeren attacked late to gap the chasers and had
enough to fend off a late attack from Cancellara. He
even rode the final kilometers on a slow puncture, but
made it across the line with the teams most important
European victory.
I
had a puncture with 5km to go. I knew it was too late
to change the wheel, so I had to take it a little easy
on the velodrome, Van Summeren
said. I know how to ride
on a flat because sometimes I forget to bring a tire
on training rides.

Parigi-Roubaix:
"E'
In
Boonen, piu' avanti, l'altra punta QuickStep,
Summeren, nascosto e dai piu' e inatteso,
all'iridato Hushovd
Conclusione:Il
di essere soddisfatto della 109a edizione della Roubaix;
solletico

Paris-Roubaix:
post race quotes
10-Apr-2011:
Ive never seen such bad luck! These
were the first words of Sporting
Director Wilfried Peeters at the conclusion of
the Paris Roubaix.
In all our years racing we have never been so
unlucky. We really werent ever able to express
our full potential due to mechanical problems, flat
tyres and falls. Boonen and Chavanel especially, but
the other riders also were very unlucky, with lots of
flats and accidents that put them out of play.
Tom
Boonen, forced to pull out of the race due to mechanical
problems, had this to say about his Roubaix: Theres
not much to do when it comes to bad luck. In the Arenberg
forest I had my first mechanical problem. My chain got
stuck between the frame and the crankset and I had to
wait almost two minutes for the flagship car. I changed
bikes and I was able to come back. Then the incredible
happened. I was catching up to the group of the favourites
after a long chase when the vibrations from the cobbles
shook my water bottle loose and it ended up between
the back wheel and the frame. The wheel suddenly was
blocked, and I lost control of the bike. At that moment
Maarten Wynants was coming up on me. He couldnt
avoid me and I ended up on the ground, hitting my knees.
At that point my race was over. In 10 years at the Roubaix
Id never had a flat and before this edition Id
only fallen twice, in 2003 and 2009. I was really unlucky.
Its too bad because I felt really good, and after
my win at the Gent Wevelgem and my 4th
place in the Ronde, it would have been nice to have
another positive result. Its not up to me to say
whether I could have won or not, but I was really having
a good day. Honour goes to Vansummeren, who rode an
extraordinary race.

It
was also an hard day for the other Quick-Step leader,
Sylvain Chavanel. I
got two flat tyres, both at an important moment. I tried
my best to get back in there both times. Then the fall
definitely took me out. I fell hard in a left curve
and did a cheese grater across the asphalt. I took up
the chase again anyway, but at that point there was
nothing more to do. This is also part of what the Roubaix
is all about. You have to learn to accept these difficult
times, too. Mentally Im going to try and turn
the page as fast as possible and concentrate on next
Sundays Amstel Gold Race.

Parigi Roubaix stregata

All'arrivo
It
ends with a ill-fated Paris Roubaix the transfer of
Team Lampre ISD on paving of the north.
Let's
start with the young rider Malori at his first adventure
in the classic of pavé much over even before
it began. Adriano has suffered a fall prior to the initial
stretch of cobblestones banging his knee, and he had
to retire at the supply and so has not at his best in
a race strange to him.
The
man as indicated by the Team like leader for the race
of today was Hondo but his race was punctuated by great
misfortune. After a masterly conductup out of the Forest
of Arenberg , Danilo is in fact suffered a fall that
damaged the cleatto of shoe. Hondo continued without
fear waiting for the arrival of team car for thechange
of shoe, but since it did not stay attached to the foot
pedal has given much in terms of time to lead. To signal
the selflessness and determination of Krivstov who sold
the wheel after a puncture to Righi and tried to escort
out of the bad day Hondo, be applauded. At the arrival
Righi was the best for the team, relying on his experience
and guile to sell Daniele was aggressive and had the
satisfaction of ending the race not far from the lead.
Bontempi's
comment: "We knew the team was not at the highest
level for the race today, but I can assure you that
our athletes have to fund all their courage, determination
and depth to keep up our honor. Too bad for him adverse
events that have seen the exit from the games of Hondo
and young riders as Malori. Great thanks to Righi that
never gave up until the end and Krivstov who sacrificed
himself for his team mates. "
